THE SYMBOL
“A woman stands at the water's edge, watching for the sailboat that is coming.”
Cancer 22° · Sabian symbols, devised 1925 (Marc Edmund Jones, clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler)
Remember to round up: a planet or point at 9°30′ takes the 10° symbol, not the 9° one.
What this degree describes
This is expectant waiting, not passive but focused, the woman's whole attention pointed at a horizon where something she's counting on has not yet arrived. Cancer knows this particular ache well, the watching that comes with loving someone who has to cross water to get back to you. There's faith here as much as anxiety: she hasn't left the shore, hasn't given up on the boat showing up, she's simply standing in the one place she'll be able to see it the moment it does.
When a planet or point falls here
A planet at this degree often shows genuine capacity for devoted, patient waiting, especially for someone or something that has to travel some distance before it can return. The Moon or Neptune here can indicate real faithfulness during periods of separation, watching without abandoning the post. It rewards staying at your own water's edge a little longer, if you still believe the boat is coming.
What are you currently standing at the water's edge for, and do you still believe it's on its way?
